A gift outside, inside on a plate...

This winter has proven to be a gift outside for me. Here in the Pacific Northwest the long gray days can wear on a girl. But this year God has been so kind and orchestrated many days without rain. Days with blue sky and crisp cold. I will take these even the overcast days with no rain any day of the week. I am so grateful it has allowed me to be outdoors more which is good for my overall peace of mind, health and spirit.

Inside, a gift we have had for many years is our wood stove. It is beautiful. And gives us such a warm cozy feeling. I am always content with the wood stove and a cracking fire inside.

A gift on my plate is nutritional food. I am so grateful to live in a country with so many food sources and options. To be able to provide good wholesome food to my family is a wonderful gift and one I often overlook.

Three Graces from people I love...

Today I was late getting my daughter and friends. They were so gracious even the hostess who had them late was cheerful and gracious to me and my lateness.

My husband is so kind to me. His love language is acts of service and I am so grateful for all the skills and now-how that God has given to him I don't believe I have ever had to call a repair man of any kind to fix things in our home.

The grace of prayer. I have many people in my life who pray for me and my family. Nothing is better than that.

Oh dear I am getting a late start... not that unusual. I have decided to use the prompts of Ann Voskamp's Holy Experience Blog. When you visit, scroll down till you see One Thousand Gifts in 2012~ the Joy dare for the month of January. You can print this pdf for yourself and you too can get into a good habit in this new and promising year of 2012. I am going to do 2 a day until I am caught up and on track.

Joy #1:3 things about myself I am grateful for.

I am a creative thinker. I don't like looking through the same lens as most people. I feel that life should be lived in full color and out loud with lots of laughing, preferably at the beach.

I am a resolution seeker. It is difficult for me to function in life if a problem is not resolved. I don't sweep things under the carpet easily... now if you were to actually look under my carpets you would find plenty of dust and treasure but that is a different story

I am an adventure finder. I love to travel and I am always up for a day trip somewhere. It is getting everyone else to board my boat that is the hard part. I don't mind change because I know it is good for me and gets me to grow in other ways, like getting out of my comfort zone and going somewhere new.

Today's Joy #6:One thing in my bag, my fridge, my heart

I am always trying to dance the dance of the purse. Keeping it functional, with enough room for all I need, when I need it, but then again, not loading it in such a way as to throw out my back. With that said, I have my sons's Hot Wheels car cam-recorder in there because you just never know when I will get the chance to do cool skateboard trick and need to record the bird's eye view of it! See I am already on my way to the Chiropractor...

Eggs. Colored eggs. Home-raised eggs. We have a flock of 12 girls who have been very good to us. So good, that we have started an egg route in 2021. I now have 4 folks on it.

In my heart...all silliness aside. One thing that has been on my heart is how to navigate parenting high schoolers gracefully. I want to transition into the mentor/encourage-er role and leave the high-alert, duty filled, character training, over-protective, worrier mom behind. I want to let go and enjoy my older kids. Make memories, have adventures, get to know the person emerging. The days of hard-core parenting are fleeting and I am not sure I am acclimating well to the new job description. I am so glad that God's grace is new everyday. And that I don't have to do it alone. He is the greatest parent there is and even knows who and what my children will become. He has plans for them. To prosper them. Plans for their future and their hopes. So what am I all worried about? This promise is for me as well.

Out with the Old and In with the NEW!

Life is full of changes. New year. New Journal. New ways to spend my time.

Things are changing...I am changing, which is a good thing. I am shutting down my website, The Patchwork Heart, Co. at the end of the month. She has been a constant friend and wonderful creative outlet for me through many of my own growing years. Those years where you figure out a bit more about who you are and who you are not.

I feel as if I have come to a place of change. It is a curiosity for me. I often feel in my deep places a sense of unrest without the knowledge of its cure. But over time I see the pattern form and I keep ruminating on it until I am ready to move ahead. Carpe Diem. That day has come.

I want to thank you for your patronage and the years of support and friendship. I can still be found here on my blog and what I have left in product will be sold willy-nilly on Etsy. The final close date for the website will be the end of January. Happy New Year!

Outside my window...It is an amazing day here in the Pacific Northwest the air is cool and crisp the sun is shining. I feel the nostalgia of the Fall season.

I am thinking... about how it has been so long since I have blogged. That life is full of unexpected changes and that there are many, many gifts that I am grateful for in my life.

I am thankful for...Hot apple cider in big mugs. Our wood burning stove with firewood chopped and stored. The last of my home grown tomatoes- farewell…till next summer. Lots of art supplies. My bible.

From the learning rooms... we are trying to work through colds and sniffles not so fun. We are accomplishing some work so I can’t complain.

From the kitchen... This is the time of year for homemade soups, turkey barley and lentil with kielbasa are on the menu this week for lunch.

I am wearing... the usual comfy clothes with socks to keep my feet warm

I am creating... not much these days. I am trying to sketch at least once a week and I am currently partially done with a sketch called Falls treasures with things I found on a walk one day.

I am going... to see the movie The Help tonight with a friend

I am reading...Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

I am hoping...for a spiritually meaningful holiday season

I am hearing...lots of coughs, sneezes, moans and groans from my loved ones, I don’t like the cold and flu season

Around the house...we have been upgrading, fixing, and puttering around doing all those little things that at some point add up. It feels good to cross things off the list as the winter season approaches.

One of my favorite things...my morning time with the Lord and my husband.

A few plans for the rest of the week: I hope to attend a theater production of Pride and Prejudice at a local playhouse and have a dinner with my brother and his family

Proctor Arts Fest 2011

Yep! It is that time of year again. I am busy getting things ready for the Proctor Arts Festival

this coming Saturday, Aug. 6th, 10:00 am-6:00 pm

located at N. 26th and Proctor, Tacoma

This is a great local festival and there is always fun for everyone! Great local artists, juried art exhibit, the farmers market, food, music, pet parade, fun fest and family stage just to name a few. Do you need more reasons to come? That right there is the perfect Saturday for family fun!

Simple Woman's Day Book July 2011 Entry

For Today July 26, 2011 ...

Outside my window... It seems that the day hasn't quite decided what to do, should I rain, or shine my sun, or be cloudy? I tend to pay no mind to such days.

I am thinking... about all the ways to be grateful in my life- 3 of us were recently in a car accident and I am so grateful that all involved were not injured seriously everyone walked away.

I am thankful for... This fragile and fluid life the Lord has given me. That the seasons of my life change and I am growing and learning. Thinking and seeking. I pray I never become stagnant.

From the learning rooms... a bit of math and a bit of summer reading to catch up and get positioned for next year’s studies. For myself I am learning about eco-dyeing and natural fiber paper making. I also am learning about watercolor journaling and art journaling.

From the kitchen...I am learning to remake jam that didn't gel ugghh two batches one strawberry and one peach-lavender good grief couldn't get it right to save my life. I also have been picking snap peas like crazy.

I am wearing... yoga pants and cotton tee the standard

I am creating...a few bits and baubles for my upcoming Proctor Art Festival, painting, and thinking about some artwork for our family room.

I am going...to the farmers market on Saturdays for fresh produce that I don’t have in my own garden.

I am reading...I just finished the Ditch Diggers Daughters by Dr. Yvonne Thorton and I am going to start Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I am hoping...That we are able to take some time to vacation this summer on the boat and finish up the house projects especially the patio in the backyard.

I am hearing...sweet quiet while the kids are at camp but I am missing them all the same.

Around the house...Things are starting to feel more settled, as if everything is finding its way back to its resting place, its own living spot. It is so good to reorganize life after a long stressful couple of years.

One of my favorite things...my new dutch door at the back of the house and our six new baby chicks.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Dinners out with my husband and some relaxing walks along the shore

The First Annual Urban Coop Tour

Have you heard of a historic tour of homes? Well move over historical society, there is a new nest in town! To my delight, in early spring I entered our coop to be on a tour of urban coops in the city of Tacoma. This ingenious ideas was hatched by Lisa at Gardensphere, where I buy my organic feed. This tour de Poulet was the first annual urban coop tour in Tacoma and yesterday, was a landmark day in the world of urban chicken keeping.

We spent the sunny, warm day, in our back yard with our hens, talking and educating folks about keeping chickens in the city. We had hundreds -YES HUNDREDS- of people from all walks of life, come asking questions, learning and enjoying our flock of 7 hens. We shared our coop building tips, critter control stories, what to do if they get sick, we talked of breeds and of course the sheer goodness of eating home grown eggs! It was a delightful day. What made it wonderful was not only were there beginners on the tour, but also experienced chicken people who just wanted to see other coops, share information and have fun!

Gardensphere made maps with nine different coops all over our city for people to visit. If folks visited all 9 and got their stamps at each place, they could redeem their maps and recieve a 15% discount for a starter coop kit. Now that is just plain cock-a-doodle fun! Thanks Gardensphere!

Layers Of Color Guest Designer

Hey Friends!

Here is an update. I am the guest designer for my dear friend Laura at Layers of Color. I created two different cards for her this month. Here is this weeks card in celebration of Mothers everywhere. I used the Love Chapter Stamp for the background text and Sent with Love On Your Special Day as the sentiment. I hand painted the photograph. I really love the sweet nature of this photo, it reminds me of the hugs I still get (once in a while) from my ten year old. Big and right around the neck!

What Have I Been Up To?

Good question!

Oh blog land I have missed you so! I have spent quite a bit of time taking care of business at home. I have found that I am only able to do so

many things at once. Can you relate? So rather than fight it and collapse in frustration and defeat, I am choosing more wisely. This means less time on the computer and more time in real time- kapish?

But, I have been up to some fun projects that continue to keep my creative heart pumping. Remember my mixed media altered bird book Livr e d'Oiseaux? Well it will be exhibited with the Puget Sound Book Artists! If you are in the Pacific Northwest in the South Sound Region please come and visit!

Feeling rather Grateful-February 2011

It snowed today....so soft and feathery, big fluffs of heaven raining down. It caught me racing around, thoughts racing, my agenda spinning, but then...

I was memorized.

And watch.

It was so ethereal.

I could feel my eyelids relax into their blink. I wrapped my arms around my excited ten year old.

The beauty of the day stopped him for a moment too(which doesn't happen too often), when he said, "Look Mom, Mr. Downing's trees are dreadlocked with snow!" Oh sweet boy! What a perfect description.

The rumble of the city seems to stop too, just to listen for the quiet of the snowfall for just a little while.

I really don't do this enough both the stopping and the listening. There is such great value in both of those things. Speaking of valueable things, here is a snippet of my grateful list for February.

I'm Grateful for:

Wee little babies
Chocolate brownies
Capable Children
Chirping birds in the sun
Walks to the park
Time to myself
Reconciliation
White feathery snow that makes us stop and listen
The boyish-man hands of my oldest son rubbing my tired shoulders
Spring bulbs
An evening off from activities

I also using a set of scripture prayers complied by Bob Hostetler called 31 Ways to Pray for Your Children. (new thing #3)

Todays's prayer:

Faith " I pray that faith will find root and grow in my children's hearts, that by faith they may gain what has been promised to them" (Luke 17:5-6, Hebrews 11:1-40) Lord may they actively seek to worship and grow their faith daily in you. I pray that when they have turned from it, they will feel as if their bones are moaning,

(Psalms 32:3)

that this would serve to remind them of the path of righteousness and return to it. ~Amen.

This Event Takes the Cake!

Thanks for stopping by on this tasty blog hop. I hope you have been inspired! This is my entry into this fun event. A special cake! I call it: Vanilla Sugar Spice Cake. My husbands favorite cake ever is Spice Cake. I just couldn't make one slice...I had to make a whole cake! All these fabulous stamps were just begging for it!

This cake, takes the cake! Sorry I couldn't help myself...LOL

I have made this mixed media piece from a round box, turned upside down and covered with designer paper from my stash. To make it more interesting I have stamped it with hearts from Fleur Hearts set in a pale pink. The cake topper is made using a cupcake liner and I used 4 more, folded into sugar crusted rose buds. The large brown sugar crusted roses are made from sewing pattern tissue paper.

I have used pattern tissue, cupcake liners, glittered covered leaves, gems, pearls, pink glitter, lace, clear pink bubbles, stacked sequins, white dove, and these LOC stamps:

Feeling rather Grateful-January 2011

Usually winter brings me to an ordinary shade of gray. My hair seems grayer, the pacific northwest sky is gloomed in multi-gray, even the trees and grass of my yard are lensed in gray. Ordinary...blah-ness.

But this year I have decided to do some things different with the help of my gracious Savior. I have been pondering my perspective and have found that I am just letting life happen, rather than living out the moments. Where did the joy of each day go?

I wonder...

I seem to have found my self in this familiar place but can't recall which path I took to get here. Ever feel this way? I don't want to live out my days in passivity, giving me the opportunity to just idly complain.

I am choosing to be grateful.

But new habits like memorizing scripture (new thing #1) and choosing to live gratefully (new thing #2) have to be practiced. So I'm practicing...

Here is a snippet of my grateful list for January.

I'm Grateful for:

Dinner with a life long friend- talking about the deep things of our lives
Thankful for sickness- sometimes the only way to stop, think, and gain new perspective and turn
A programmable crock pot- my constant companion
A studio filled with treasure to create with
New books to read and enrich my life with
Seeing the value in memorizing God's word
A little boy who needs a talking to everyday about self-control
A husband who makes me feel safe
A friendly face at Starbucks, blueberry scones, and my sketchbook.

Some of you may be visiting from Masterpiece Monday Welcome! I am glad you stopped by, let me know that you visited and leave a comment, I enjoy visiting with those who love the Lord, art, books and nature or any combination of those. Some of you have been curious from other posts to know what my "Bird Book"is. Here is a peak at my Altered Mixed Media Book, Livre de Oiseaux. I haven't finished it yet, it is a work in progress and something I find great joy in creating.

I was inspired by a book my friend Laura of LOC showed me called Nature Inspired by Tracie Lyn Huskamp. This book has great techniques and ideas to walk you through creating your own mixed media book. If you are an altered art fan then you will enjoy this book! My book is filled with artwork as well as poetry, bible verses and other sayings that inspire me to think beyond myself.

Become Radiant

This page features a verse from Isaiah 60:1 & 5a It reads:

Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. Then you shall see and become radiant and your heart shall swell with joy.

I Love the imagery. I think the birds do this every morning, don't you! To become radiant... it is only with the glory of the Lord that I could ever hope to be this way.

I have been building this book for some time but recently have come back to it and I have found great pleasure in it's creation, I almost can't stop making pages for it. I intend on using my own bird sketches for another 2 page layout but haven't decided on a color scheme just yet.

For the cover, I am using an old rummage sale book. I have taken out the insides so that I can use the cover and spine. And because I am so cheap, I use canvas drop cloths from the hardware store for the substructure. Then I start building the pages.

I am a collector. My friend Laura and I call each other little squirrels, because of our gathering instincts. I tell you what, it is hard for me to throw out stuff I know I will use on projects like this. So consequently, I have drawers and baskets, pockets and piles of treasure all around my studio. I tell myself it is one of my best character qualities...hey, not everyone can turn trinkets and trash into soulful treasures from the heart, right?(I say that humbly)

My version of Colossians in a Year Challenge Memory Book

I have committed. There I said it. No, really, I want to... I want to hide God's amazing word in my heart, but I am not very good at memorization. It is true, ask my kids. Could it be that I haven't used that part of my brain for years? Perhaps.

My youngest enjoys watching me blunder our bible memory for co-op while he whips right through, not one mistake. I smile. My brain says,"Hey whatever works! Whoo hoo I am one step ahead of ya still little mister!" But my heart stings just a little knowing full well it is a weakness and one place I lack self-discipline.

Sometimes, I think there is just not enough room in there and if I start memorizing I will blow a fuse. Or worse...other important stuff will fall out. Maybe some of you know what I am talking about. You know brain space, that's what I call it. I only have so much. Right?

Well no more shrinking violet! I have decided to take the challenge. I was inspired by Ann Voskamp blog post on creating a habit. A good one. Ah-ha she is on to something! Note to self: you can create good habits- not just bad ones!

So I downloaded her free gift and put together my Heather-ified version. Creative and pretty are good motivators for me. I sure enjoyed putting this together. I used 3x5 cards from the $1 store and pretty paper I had on hand. Glued each weeks verses to the card and punched holes in the top. I used two rings to hold the cards and ribbon and a rosette to embellish the front. I have it right on my desk in the school room so I can look at it all the time.

I have faithfully started, but I have to say... it ain't pretty.

Jan. 5, 2011 ...

Outside my window... it is a cold gray morning, the kind of morning that makes you want to quickly grab the paper off the porch and quickly close the door as to not let the cold air into the house.

I am thinking... I am thinking about the activities of the evening and looking forward to fellowship with friends over dinner at church. I am also thinking that I have made some good choices to reduce the amount of commitments and that feels good as I head into another year.

I am thankful for...I am so grateful for the peace and quiet of the morning and children deep in study. I am grateful for several good nights in a row of peaceful sleep.

From the learning rooms... Today we are back to our studies in classical education. We are doing the Middle ages in History, Old Testament Kings and Prophets, Calligraphy and Art of the Middle ages, Latin, Math, Astronomy, and Literature. We have had a great start to our schedule. I know the kids are always grateful to get back to a schedule and so am I.

From the kitchen... tonight for supper we will be eating dinner at church. But I am thinking I need to use up the bananas that are turning so I will bake some banana bread. I might even put some chocolate chips in there, yuuummmyy!

I am wearing...Yoga pants, long sleeve shirt, fuzzy socks, the usual.

I am creating...I finished sewing the valances for the family room and was able to do a page in my fabric altered book on birds, I am close to finishing a page for the Mocking Bird.

I am going...to take finish up my lesson plans for bible and art for co-op so that is off my plate and ready for next week. I also need to update the bible timeline and have it ready for the other bible teacher.

I am reading...The Vicar of Wakesfield and The Magician's Nephew.

I am hoping... That our school day will be productive and enjoyable.

I am hearing... the groans and yawns of my children thinking and figuring while they work at their desks.

Around the house...things are sort of clean and picked up, we will get on that when school is finished. And every time I go into the kitchen I smile because it looks so beautiful since I painted it last weekend. Fresh and clean, warm and cozy!

One of my favorite things...Having done an honest hard days work where my body and mind ache for the comfort of my bed and rest.

A few plans for the rest of the week: I am making sure to get the rest I need to be on my game for my family and all that we do here at the Orchard Street Farm.

2011 Surprises

I am honored to have been published in Christian Paper Craft Magazine. This is an e-zine that I submitted to last fall. How fun to find out today that I am the first listed under the Autumn and Thanksgiving catagory. I submitted a piece called Fluttering Fall. The colors remind me of the richness of fall. It features LOC Butterfly Collector stamps. Sewing techniques, beads, material scraps, lace trim and other found items that seemed to marry nicely with this piece.

December 27th 2010 ...

Outside my window... it is dark and wet, the kind of weather that makes you stay inside all day. I can see streaks of rain splash on the panes of glass. And it is cold.

I am thinking... I am thinking that I need to pursue some quiet reflective time and think about the upcoming year. I want to be intentional with my time, relationships, and choices.

I am thankful for...I am so grateful for the life I have here at our cozy house. I often need to remind myself and reflect on all that I have been blessed with. I am thankful for happy healthy kids that love the Lord and a husband who loves the Lord and me!

From the learning rooms... Not much has happened here since we have taken our holiday break. In the past I have done a modified school schedule but this year we took it off fully and I am really glad that we have. I have to say there has been lots of reading for pleasure though.

From the kitchen... tonight I made Crockpot Sloppy Joe's and a green salad with simple dressing. Delicious!

I am wearing...the usual work clothes and my apron

I am creating...Well I have been working on a mixed media bird book that I am enjoying very much. Didn’t get to work on it today. I am going to start another page this week (I hope!)

I am going...to take my daughter out to friends this week and go to the library with the boys.

I am reading...For Christmas this year my husband got me several old books at an estate sale some of them are great books of poetry, 2 wonderful art books- Art and the Bible and Art of the Masters. I just started The Vicar of Wakefield. I just finished Weaver of Dreams by Myrtle Reed, an author from the early 1900's.

I am hoping... For a year of rest and replenishment, but I am expecting a year of repair.

I am hearing... the drone of the the TV and the rumble of the dish washer.

Around the house...things are clean and picked up.Today was a day to make it happen! We spent a good portion of the day cleaning and putting away the remains of Christmas. Mopping, sweeping, de-junking drawers, rearranging, I love that feeling of a fresh start. For me it begins with my environment!

One of my favorite things...an orderly drawer with a place for everything and everything in its place. It brings me great peace.

A few plans for the rest of the week: I am planning to get back on track with my eating (too many Christmas sweets, oh dear) and continue my quest to purge and simplify life in all ways.

Books are my favorite treasure! If I found a treasure chest full of books I would be the richest girl in the world, truly!

Lately, I have been filling my mind with words by authors who have written on Art and Christianity. Two of my loves! Imagine my delight when I found them together in several books. Two books that I devoured due to their subject matter are entitled Art for God's Sake by Philip Graham Ryken and Art and the Bible by Francis A. Schaeffer . If you are looking to devote your artwork to the expression of worship and testimony of the Lord then these are" must reads"!

Here are some brief thoughts on these two books. I enjoy sharing the things of my heart:

In Art for God's Sake Ryken takes us on a biblical journey back to the Old Testament and the building of the Tabernacle as directed by God. This takes us to the roots of art and how it is ordained by God for His Glory. Throughout history the relationship of the Christian faith and art has been misunderstood. I believe that currently there is a rediscovery of the arts and the Christian artist! This short little book is the perfect "primer" into such a subject. I believe the author is teaching Christians that there is hope for the Christian artist, that art can be used to express devotion, adoration, and worship of our Divine Creator in a fallen world. How exciting!

Art and the Bible talks about the Lordship of Christ over, even the arts. Shaffer also give us a biblical formula for critiquing and looking at art with a subjective and objective eye. This is really useful especially when looking at abstract artwork today.

Simple Transformation

I have had the delightful privileged of being on an art discussion panel with 3 other very accomplished artists in my community, at an event called Celebration of the Arts, held at my church. What a pleasure to listen, learn and share with them. Here is some of what I have come to know about my art and how it is interwoven with my faith.

Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We're free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are (transformed) much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.

In the art piece, Simple Transformation, I have used a mixed media style to represent my own fibrous existence- layered, tattered and textured, plain as it is. This piece represents my own transformation into a creature created by God. The beauty and freedom of a butterfly reflects the qualities that God sees in me. It is with the ever presence of the Holy Spirit that I am able to emerge each day and reflect the iridescence of my own winged-spirit and give my praises back to the King of Glory.

One of the great responsibilities God bestowed to the the butterfly is pollination. In a symbolic way as a Christian, I am like the butterfly. I am called to drink in the nectar of God's word and His grace and then spread that essence to others through my own life, by my actions, my words, through grace and with love. I freely fly and give to others, for this is what I am called to do. This is why I was transformed and broken from my cocoon of sin and shame. I am to take this pollen of truth to others. Regardless of the type of flower. Regardless of where you come from, what your background is, how you have gotten to this point in time. Here, let me share with you what you need to emerge from your cocoon of sin and live transform into the creature God created you to be.

I have come to learn that for me, my art and my faith are inter-dependent. For without one I would not have the other. Alone they are ineffective. Together I can use this gift to spread the love and Gospel of Jesus and to bring beauty to a world in desperate need of knowing the Savior.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Up on the mountain plateau- a new church

We also conducted 3 VBS classes while there and expected to minister to apporx. 75-120 kids. But the Lord is bigger than that and we ended up playing and teaching 34o children all together. At our last VBS we had 218 kids! It was beyond amazing to see them excitedly file into a small 30x45 ft. building with only 2 lights. Yes all 218 AND their parents! Our presence in these small churches did two things: spread the gospel in a new way and also gave credibility to these new, small churches. Many came just to see the crazy American Gringos, who could blame them? I was an anomaly all my own. In third world countries if you are on the more round and curvaceous side, like I am, you are considered to have a wealthy husband, because you get to eat a lot. But add to that, that I am white and blue-eyed... talk about the perfect trifecta! I was something to look at and get a picture with. Not to mention I am silly and crazy when I get around lots of children. I can't help but have fun and smile a lot.

I guess if I have to suffer for Christ's sake this is the way to go!

We set off on our journey. Our high schoolers were great travelers and we got through customs and the airport in Guatemala City with no problems. We spent 6 hrs. or so on the windy mountain highway, to our home base in Huehuetenago, in the northern mountainous region of Guatemala. We went to two small Mayan Churches.

This I will never forget: As we sat in this church with wide wondering eyes staring at us, our host, who is a pastor and native, gave a message. I became confused because I wasn't getting the whole message of what were to be doing. I could pick out a few words but it was nothing that I understood because I am not fluent in Spanish. Then, when it was translated from Spanish into the Mayan or the Mum language, I was really lost. It wasn't until our host Edwin, speak in English that I understood "in the hearing of my ears"! It was then, that I knew what it meant to hear the word of God in my OWN language. As English speaking Americans we are rarely confronted with this problem, right? Most everyone knows some English. We don't have to work too hard at communicating. What a moment of clarity for me. I will not look at God's word the same. My own language was meaningful to me in a new way. Our high schoolers gave testimonies of what Christ has done for them in their lives and we sang them songs in English. It was very powerful.

My First Missions Trip-Guatemala2010 part 1

I am having trouble starting this post. Not because I don't know where to start but because I have so much to say. I suppose I could start by saying I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Really, you ask? REALLY. It was nothing like I imagined it to be. This trip was an exercise in trust, faith and growth. One thing I have learned about my Lord is that whatever He places in front of me has reason and purpose...nothing is wasted. It will be used for the Glory of His Kingdom someday! Isn't it exciting when you have that truth? Life becomes a different kind of adventure when you have that attitude.

I fell in love with Guatemala. Before we set out I had asked the Lord what can I do to share your love with a group of people where I don't speak the same language and He said, through art. So together the Lord and I came up with a plan in preparation for this trip. I had the children of our church make pictures to give to the children of a Mayan Indian Church in the hills of coffee country, in a place called Aqua Dolce (Sweet Water).

The picture had the scripture in Spanish of John 3:16 on it. I spent two evenings with the children of our church teaching them about Guatemala and what we would be doing there on our mission trip. I told them that they would get a picture back from a Guatemalan child. They thought this was a great idea and many of them chose to make more than one picture. It was fun to see the enthusiasm and joy as they did their artwork. It is always more fun to make something when you know that it will go to someone special isn't it? Our children also put together several kits of foamie cut outs(120) for a project to do at the VBS times while we were there.

Wee Little Spring Basket For Easter -Instructions

Happy Spring everyone! As promised the recipe how to's for my Wee Little Spring Basket.

This isn't a traditional tutorial with all the photos but more of all the instructions and supplies needed to make your own.

Let's get started! Yippee are you skipping with glee?

Here is what you will need:

Sm. Peet pots from your local nursery or garden shop
Robin Egg blue crepe paper Opaque Shrink Plastic
Mocha Brown Chalk Ink
Layers of Color Vintage Rose and Acanthus Leaves Stamp Set
Silver German Scrap
Teal blue Binding tape
5 in. your favorite robin egg blue wired ribbon
Embossed wallpaper
Robin Egg blue paint
Brown paint
Teal blue watercolor pencil or other coloring medium
Glue
teal glitter glue
sm. hole puncher
Something for the handle-I used bark covered wire- I know way cool stuff!

Step1: You will want to stamp image onto shrink plastic with brown chalk ink. At this step you could also color in the image as you please. I just left it plain-jane. Then shrink according to shrink plastic directions.

Step2: Using your embossed wallpaper cover the peet pot. Do this to your liking. I lined mine up at the top and then wrapped the paper around the pot, glued it. Then I took scissors and cut slits around the bottom and folded tabs towards the middle of bottom and glued down.

Step3: Make a paint wash by using a small amount of paint and double or triple the amount of water. Paint evenly over pot, then with paper towel dab off the excess so that the paint stays in the crevices but not on the raised portions. Let dry. Do the same with a wee bit of brown paint but, water down even more, so it is more like a stain. Repeat process to your liking.

Step4: Make bottom of pot by taking several layers of crepe paper(I used 5) and cut a circle at least 3/4 in. larger than the pot bottom. Staple together then make small cuts all around the outside of your pot. glue to the bottom. Ruffle and poof to your liking.

Step5: Make a rosette from your ribbon by pulling one side of ribbon wire tight, then glue seam to fully encircle. Glue shrink plastic roses to ribbon

Step6: Attach your German scrap trim to the top edge of pot and punch holes for handle.

Step7: Make a fringe fan with crepe paper and glue to the inside of pot where you want your rosette to go. Attach cut out of colored and glittered Acanthus Leaves on the diagonal as a back drop to your Rose vignette.

Step 8: Glue Rose vignette to front of your pot. Next attach handle and tie with binding tape.

Voila a wonderful Wee Little Spring basket to fill with goodies to give to a friend or to celebrate Easter!

A New Year

A new year, a clean slate, a blank page. I am so grateful for this time of change. Just last night my sweet husband took me out to a fun, lounge-y, coffee shop so we could set some goals for 2010. I was trying to remember the last time we had made our list and neither of us could remember. Oh dear! How life gets in the way and often distracts us from what is truly important...so, 2010 is the year of the new list!

I am a list maker by nature. It really does help me stay focused and steer free from distraction.

Here are some things from our list:

Be good stewards of what we already have.
Don't over commit our time
Prepare our children for the next season of life-big changes are on the horizon
Stick to priorities
Have more family fun

Personally:

I want to start a regular routine of practicing and doing my art.
I also want to streamline my time on the computer and be more affective in my day.
I also will be giving more time to my online business and liquidating inventory.

This is good news to those who like a good garage sale! In fact I will be having a Winter Attic Sale starting next week so stay tuned! All kinds of bobbles, bits and bundles of treasure and at a good price -what a great way to start the new year!

Playing with Sequins

This Christmas I had fun with sequins...I was inspired by my friend Dana T. She was recreating a Christmas swag like the one her Grandmother had made. Her Grandmother had cut out white felt letters to spell out Christmas and be-decked and be-jeweled them with sequins and beads. Then backed it with red felt to hide stitching and sewed each letter onto a wide red velvet ribbon, talk about cute! It was so festive and fun I had to try my hand at it.

However, I gave it a twist and did ornaments for my kids for their ornament boxes. We give each of our children an ornament every year until they graduate from college or marry. That way they have all their ornaments to fill their first Christmas tree once they are on their own. I love this tradition, it is practical and the kids really love thinking back to each Christmas represented by an ornament.

So here are my charming little birds. I used Layer of Color's Touch of Elegance stamp and fabric ink to stamp down the background pattern. Then I went to town with colorful beads and sequins. They are stuffed just a little to give that quilted look. I stitched on wings and then strung them to hang.

Girlhood Tidbit #13 Christmas Time Treat

During the holidays it is fun to remember our friends by giving them a little something special. Nothing say special more than homemade right? I think so that is why I made Candied Citrus Peel candy this year. My friend Laura makes this wonderful Christmas time treat and shares this delectible delight with her friends and family. What a sweet idea. I love sharing recipes with my friends don't you? When I tried her candied orange peel I thought I had died and gone to sugar plum heaven, it was such perfection.

This year we have been eating by the box full, Little Cuties, which are a seedless Tangerines, ooohhh are they good. My children kept leaving their peels around and so I got the idea to actually save them and then use them to make this sweet treat. I had to improvise a bit because Laura just told me how she made it, I didn't really have a recipe. But no biggy because it is super easy. This is my version from my memory. Thanks so much Laura!

Candied Citrus Peels

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

1/4 cup orange juice (optional)

Citrus Peels- Orange, Tangerine, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime you choose. How about a variety? Wouldn't that be wonderful!!

Incorporate together in a sauce pan on the stove.

Slice orange peel in long strips and place in sugar mixture once sugar is dissolved.

Simmer on low until white part of peel starts to turn translucent. Remove your pieces from the syrup and into a shallow dish of plain white sugar. Turn gently and coat each piece and then lay on a cooling rack to dry. Then package in cello bags and fun ribbon. Yum.

I also bottle up the remaining syrup in pretty glass pitchers to use in tea as a sweetner. It is delicious in Double Bergamot tea, which happens to be one of my favorites. This makes a wonderful hostess gift around the hoidays paired together with the Candied Citrus Peels.

A Lesson in Giving

I want to tell you a story. This really happened and I hope it will inspire your heart to do something like this too.

During the Christmas season a Mother and Daughter decided it was time to get a fancy dress for some upcoming, formal events. This year the Mother seemed to find it hard to do extra things. There had been a death in their family and Christmas just didn't sparkle like it had in the past. She was tired and worn on the inside. Money was tight and she was having a hard time justifying going and getting a new dress. It seemed like the dress fell into the not- a- necessity column.

But she realized that her Daughter really hadn't asked for many things this year and was really making do with what she had already. She even attended a formal Christmas party for youth group in something nice, while all the other girls came in fancy party dresses. The Daughter's spirits were not dampened one bit. Her Mother was very proud of her quiet strength and grace in a situation that, for most middle school girls would have been a disaster.

Mother decided that this was an occasion where she would do her best and with the Lord's help get her Daughter a new party dress. Maybe she could sell some extra patterns or use some of her grocery money instead.

When Mother asked her Daughter where she would like to start their search, her Daughter excitedly said,"How about Goodwill?" Her mother was pleasantly surprised at her Daughters thrift-sense response.

"Alright let's start there." Mother chimed in with excitement, thinking this could turn out to be a wonderful time together.

Now, like most middle school girls shopping can be a bit frustrating because there is always a certain" look" to be found, then, compound that with a second hand store and you have an equation for frustration.

Mother and Daughter eagerly looked around. They carefully searchrd the isles coming up with only a few options, two of which were promising skirts. The Daughter tried all the clothing on, finding small things wrong with each item, however one skirt seemed to fit the bill! It was black and long and just what the Daughter was looking for. To the Mother this meant heading else where to find a top to match. Oh dear, thought the Mother, this could be a long day.

With the last thing tried on and rejected the Mother turned to her cart with a heavy sigh.

A woman with a wide smile and twinkling eyes, was standing in line waiting patiently for the dressing room. "Is that your daughter?" she asked.

"Yes, she is eleven."Mother answered.

"I have a daughter too, she is seven. Your daughter reminds me of her"said the waiting woman.

" Mom I am done... this skirt is just a bit too tight." the Daughter fussed.

"Well if you don't love it, don't get it," the Mother sighed.

"Can I give you something?" Asked the waiting woman.

"Sure," said the Mother quietly, with a weary smile. Mother was thinking this woman was going to give her an article of clothing that she had found for her daughter to try on. Or hand her a business card and try to sell her something. Instead the woman dug under her heap of clothes and dug out her wallet. How was Mother going to tell her politely no thank you? What happened next was not expected at all.

Mother wasn't quite sure what was going on and the woman said with great joy on her face,

"I would like you to have this,"and she handed a $50.00 gift certificate card to the Mother. "I would love for you to go buy your daughter a new Christmas dress."

With a gasp of disbelief and tears welling in her eyes the Mother wasn't sure how to react. Is this real? Why would this stranger do this for me? Oh I can't take this I don't deserve such a gift! With encouraging words from the waiting woman the Mother took the card and hugged the woman she didn't even know. The Daughter in disbelief thanked the waiting woman. The Daughter's warm smile crept from ear to ear as she realized a new dress was a possibility. The waiting woman disappeared into the dressing room as if she hadn't ever been there at all.

The Daughter got a new dress and shoes that day, there was even money left to buy a matching purse and head band to fancy up her hair!

I can't help but see how this parallels so beautifully with the story of Christ and his "gift card" to us.

Blessings from the Lord often come so unexpectedly. During a Roman census and political strife.

Blessings are packaged in ways we don't recognized, as a sweet child- king.

Given to us by a God we have not seen and a stranger to many.

All you have to do is take this gift of salvation with tears in your eyes, say thank you and hug the one who has shared it with you. Then praise the Lord for His goodness and Love. Serve him with gladness by giving to someone else. Serve him by loving someone who doesn't deserve it. Or help someone who is less fortunate than yourself.

This is the gift of Christmas: the unexpected child-king who served us with His death so that we might have eternal life...it is a lesson in giving I will never forget.

I have a real love for birds, so does my friend Laura. She made a bird house creation awhile back and so I made a spin off of her idea. Birds of a Feather Flock together right! Well, these two birds do anyway... She has become a great friend and real inspiration in my life. She is able to see me with the eyes of Christ my warts and all and I am so blessed by her friendship! This bird house not only represents our households of faith but also our households of friendship!

Here is my Fall Release Paper Art Creation! I have used 4 different Layers of Color sets on this Laura has I have utilized 4of the nine new designs sets being released today! I have used: A Touch of Elegance on the eves of the roof and as the nest entrance, Merci Bouquet on the background, Her Majesty's Urns for the finials and in the center, and Backyard Birds. I also used the Garden Borders set. I used glitter glue, watercolor pencils, embossed paper and old text books, 2 types of stamp ink, and clear bubbles.

Party On! Another Sneak Peek project!

Another SNEAK PEEK! This is another project I will unveil on the 15th at the LOC Fall Release Party. I used LOC stamps, card stock, re purposed cashmere sweater, beads, lace, velvet ric rac... oh I am saying too much you will just have to check back and see!

Have you ever been working on a project and with every little detail you add it seems to unfurl itself? It seems to bloom and get better and then you get more excited, so you want to keep creating and not do laundry... uh hummm... ooops! True confession.

Well this was one of those projects. It has been taking up much needed brain space and I was finally able to devote some time and energy to it. It is the end of something I started last year and I hope to have the pattern and instructions up on my website, The Patchwork Heart, Co. for purchase just in time for the Christmas season! YEA! The best part is that I have used LOC stamps from the New Fall Releases! It will be an e-pattern so you pay-download- and go, art and crafting just got easier!

The Gift

I was given a gift today.

Unexpectedly.

Isn't it a beauty? I have been collecting these treasures over the years and I am up to about seven. They have all been abandoned or blown from the trees in our yard.

I just marvel at all the layers and funny fibers that are found inside some of these nests. This one has a bit of red curling ribbon and a beautiful stem with the seed pods still attached.

The outsides are always tattered, matted and rugged.

Rough.

But not the inside. In the roundness of the inside I can see the smooth indentation of where small eggs were cradled and where small babies were care for. It really is so sweet to ponder.

My husband brought this in on the first afternoon of home school, as the kids and I tackled our classical writing exercises. It was rough day, we were tired in our thinking and progress had been so slow. It was such a kind gesture. I really felt such a deep warmth come over me like peace.

Thank you dear husband.

Even the birds of the air are cared for and not forgotten like it says in Matthew 6:26. You can see the Lord's provision for these amazing creatures. It reminded me in a tangible way that the Lord will make a way in this chapter of our lives and bring me peace.

He does care for me.

Doing Hard Things

Oh am I being stubborn!

Not the kind of stubborn you are when you are right and someone else is wrong, its the kind of stubborn born from not wanting to plunge into something you need to do. Some call it procrastination. For me, this type of stubborn is formed from the later and therefore, it is an attitude of the heart.

Yea, I know not so good.

Usually, I love a challenge and I am anxious to try new things but, I am not feeling that way about some new things on my horizon...isn't that strange? I wonder where this is coming from? I have a feeling it is a sense of having to give up other things in order to do something I know is important. Perhaps it means rearranging my priorities to serve others for awhile.

So in other words it comes from the desire to serve self first....ohhhh.

Boy is that disappointing. You know, when you do "the-reflective-inward-look" and it isn't so pretty. The whole dying to self thing is a tough one in the life of this Christian. It is times like this that I am grateful for the loving grace of Jesus. I am glad that He is the bearings by which I can reset the compass of my life to when I get off course.

Well, this home school year is looking to be a great challenge for me. I have 2 middle-schoolers this year and the challenge comes in the form of Latin, Classical Writing, and Formal Logic. Yes, I know isn't that crazy? Would you want to dive right in? I didn't think so...see what I mean?

The upside to these classes is that I will get all the knowledge and skill as a by-product from teaching these things to my children. The bonus of homeschooling! Not so convincing is it....

So say a prayer for me this year, as I dive into these challenging subjects. We will all have our noses in the books of great writers and philosophers from ancient times. I am sure the Lord will bless the effort and we will learn wonderful things from our journey through time. I know I will enjoy following the golden thread of providence God has woven in the tapestry throughout all of history.

Lord, you know my heart... I pray that I would give my selfish desires a rest and give them over to you. Bless our efforts to study new and exciting things even when I fail to be obedient and humble, use these lessons and this homeschooling time for your glory and our refinement, especially mine. Amen

Getting back into the swing!

Getting back to the swing of things. There is something of great comfort to me about the change in season and rhythm of life. It does my mind and spirit good!

Today was a great day! My friend D. and kids came over and we went on our annual blueberry pickin' trek. We picked in the morning, came home and made lunch for the kids, then got busy!

We canned 16 jars of blueberry preserves with some left over to snack on. We are pretty proud of ourselves and let me tell you the blueberry preserves are something to die for. And to think the berries were free at our local blueberry park, that makes it even sweeter!

I have always enjoyed the organic process of picking fresh food and then preserving it for later for my family to enjoy. It seems like a lot of work but I sure do enjoy the satisfaction that I get from it. D. and I enjoyed the afternoon, chatting and laughing the day away. I can't think of a better way to get back into the swing of things!

I got a lovely gift from my friend Laura at Layers of Color! What a delight to get this from her, she is so gracious. And she is the kind of friend I can truly be myself with, warts and all.

This is a little gem! I had admired it when she posted it on her website- Wow!- to think she had created it for me. These are some of my favorite colors too. She is the fair haired beauty and I am the dark haired maiden. Thanks Laura, I would pick you too!

Summer Preservation Project

This summer I have taken on a preservation project. My daughters “NeeNee” has become so frayed with love that she is in danger of, dare I say it? Becoming extinct. So I am attempting my hand at quilting. So far it is a very rough and amateur attempt. However the good news is I think it will do its intended job and protect NeeNee.

My inspiration was to make a quilt using pretty fabrics on the top and then to sew the NeeNee onto the back. This way my daughter can still see her and feel her NeeNee. I am hoping that by sewing her directly onto the backing she will be girded up and won’t fall apart.

Now NeeNee can live forever…can you hear the fairy music?

I know that when I am feeling worn and frayed it is a good hug from my hubby and the word of God that grids me up, reassures me and steadies me on. The word of God also talks of sowing seed could I be so bold as to interpret the imagery of that to a different picture? How about, sewing the seed of His word onto my heart? Aaaahhhh I feel an art inspiration coming on! Oh happy day….

I will post the end results when I am done with the art and the quilt.

Thank you Lord for your word and the gift of words your inspiration is astounding to me. Lord I hope I will always bring you glory with my creativity. You are the song I hear in my heart and the colors by which I create. I love you Amen.

Fighting with Ourselves

Today I saw my youngest fighting with himself. The inner battle of pride joined with independence and determination. I had asked him to move some lumber that had been sitting in the yard and to stack it neatly until we could get to it. After a while, the bad attitude coupled with lots of raw emotions, displayed with fist of frustration well, it started to really grate my nerves.

My first inkling was to quickly chastise him for his outburst and poor attitude, but then it occurred to me, that all he really had to do was ask for help. As he tried to untangle this heap of wood and boards by himself he got more upset and more frustrated and more determined to show it who was boss. Tears came and went, soon grunts and groans. Pouting in defeat. All the while I kept praying please just ask mama for help and I will gladly come help you...

Oh how I know this place.

If you threw in a few cuss words that could've been me! Not such a pretty site mind you, especially when you are 40 something and striving to live a life for Christ...there is no secret I fall short more often than not.

It got me to thinking about how so many times my heart would have been spare so much discouragement and frustration if I had only asked the Lord for help.
In my pride and determination to be independent I learn the hard way.

So, here is the lesson, it is much easier to be interdependent than alone.

Lord I pray for my son today, it was difficult to watch him struggle. It must be difficult for you as well Lord, watching us struggle as we so often do. Give him courage today to die to self and ask for help from someone who loves him. Lord I pray that he will come to you first with all that he has in him, that you would work mightily in his little heart and teach my son your loving ways. Amen

Rites of Passage

Big Blessings in Small Sweet Packages

I have been maneuvering past lots of life bumps and emotional potholes on my path recently. Lately, it seems like the weight is draining my joy. I hate it when that happens! I write this with a bit of tongue and cheek in mind but, I really do hate it when I lose my handhold on joy! I find it most irritating because I am a fun loving creature by nature. I just am not me without it.

But grace is new every morning and this morning was no exception. I woke rested, physically refreshed and ready for the day, this was

As I went about my day I had clarity of thought, and diligence in action. It was a good day of tying up loose ends and accomplishments. Out of the corner of my eyes I kept getting glimpses of two little impish elves(two of my kids) flittering about the house.

What were they up to?

Pretty soon, as I came into the kitchen I noticed this on the counter:

Then a sweet little boy of mine told me with a twinkle of delight, to check in my bedroom, "there was something on my bed!" Well, that's strange because I hadn't made my bed yet. And this is what I found on my bed:

Sometimes God sends me small sweet packages filled with Big Blessings. Tiny collections of trinkets, little bits and pieces of love tied with ric rac.

This was one of those days where my children were the bearers of God's kindness, the messengers of encouraging words to a tired mama's soul. They were just the map I needed to avoid the bumps and potholes and find my trail back to joy again. They lead me straight to the foot of the cross and the refuge of a loving Savior.

Oh Lord, you are such a wonder to me, who am I that you are mindful of me?

Thank you Father in heaven for your refining fires that I may count it all joy. Amen

Tea Time Celebration Favors

Spring is a time to celebrate Easter, Mother's Day, and Spring Teas! It is a time when we start to linger longer outdoors in the evenings because it is still light out. It is also a time when it rains and winds blow in tumultuous clouds and spring storms. But I have the solution for the rainy, stormy, spring days.

Make some celebration favors. I used Layers of Color Flower Child stamp and dressed up this pre-punched purse from K&D Company. Add some glitter, antique buttons, paper lace and crocheted trim and voila! Cuteness!

My daughter deciding how things would look best

My younger daughter and I have been busy planning for our traditional Mother-Daughter Tea at our Church. This is a wonderful celebration of womanhood and motherhood, it is something we look forward to every year. This year I have decided it is time to give the responsibility to my 11 year old daughter. So this year she is in charge of the table decorations and favors. I was really excited when she said yes with such enthusiasm! I have enjoyed training her and making suggestions along the way, but ultimately the final result has been hers.
The first step is to decide on a budget and color theme
She was given $25.00 as her budget. She came up with the idea of using some pretty paper products that we already had. By doing this she saved money on her budget and was able to utilize that money for something else, goodies for the favors. The paper products also became our color theme.

Step two: Designing a center piece for the table
We started gathering things that we have in our home already and that fit with our color theme of light pink, raspberry pink, apple green and bright white. We pulled out antique linens, silk flowers, a small porcelain tea pot, ceramic bunny vase, crystal votive and tea light candles, picture frames, a tea book and milk glass along with everyday white tea cups and saucer. We will also used a sign I made for my daughter's room because I used the same napkins. I love the verse from above which is also on the sign. It is what we strive for in our home for our children. Let the fun begin! Here is what she came up with: isn't it just lovely!

Step three: The Favors
She wanted the favors to be unique and pretty but was limited by her 25$ budget. So I asked her if she would like to use some die cut paper purses that I had in my stash and wouldn't you know we had exactly eight in just the right colors, isn't the Lord gracious! She was able to find some cute sticky notes and pens at the Dollar Store, and we got fun tea and chocolate to go with it.

Favors were the purses, aren't they cute!

I am looking forward to sitting at my daughter's lovely table. It will be so wonderful to hear the other ladies encouraging her and giving her accolades on her efforts. I love watching the Lord's providence working out details blessing her efforts as we both yield to His gentle guidance.

Post event: We had a lovely time! My daughter was praised for her creativity and for the care she took in creating a table. What fills my heart to over flowing is the love and kindness ladies young and old showed her as they noticed how she placed things and what she brought to the table and how economical she was. They were so thrilled to see the tradition being passed down.

Snowing in Spring

Our Cherryblossom Tree

We had a glorious day on Friday! The sky was the best color of blue like cornflower blossoms and the sunshine was good medicine for my tired soul. It was so warm and bright, no wonder the bulbs and seedlings reach out for it pushing through the darkness of the earth. I have felt like that lately, reaching out to the light to be warmed and nourished. It is amazing what an afternoon in the sun will do for a busy mama!

I decided since I wasn't feeling well that we could finish up our schoolwork outside on our new homemade picnic table. The sunshine and fresh air would do us some good! Something about a change of venue and the promise of being outside more often, was a great remedy for our lack of
enthusiasm towards school.

The breeze was balmy and so relaxing. To our delight as it blew through the boughs of our cherry tree it took with it, its billowy, soft-white, petals and then dropped them all around us. My youngest, with awe in his little boy voice said,

" Look Mama! Its snowing..."

Washing day- Our linens on the line

Of all the chores in the universe my downfall is laundry. Anyone with me? It is the last thing I feel like doing, even if it is my own laundry! Yes, I am one of those that waits until I am out of undies...a true confession. My poor family! So, here is the weird part, you are going to die...I love doing laundry in the summer when I can hang it on my clothesline to dry! Super weird huh?

Here is what I think this Heather-ism is all about. I think it comes down to this organic connection with the simpler things in life. Then of course there is doing your laundry outside in the fresh air and sunshine too! Gotta love that! The wonderful smell of linens hung on the line(trust me there is one) and the crisp feel of them too, it really is a simple delight of life. I think my clothes fold easier and into nicely creased folds, ahhhh!

Oh I know what you are thinking...she has got to haul it out there, pin it up, take it down and fold it- how is that simpler? Well it probably isn't, but I can say with all certainty I like it better and I actually DO it! My husband would say it is in the same idiosyncrasy vein as why I have to chew two pieces of gum. Yea, I know super weird!

Here is my two-cents: I think old fashioned clothespins are the best. Stay tuned...I am making a new clothespins pouch too. I will post this soon so you can see. An old-fashion pattern with a new look, I think you will like it!

Books! Books!-I Love Books!

As spring breaks forth into her glory, I love to get out my nature and gardening books to inspire my imagination. This brings me the hope of sunnier days ahead. My absolute favorite book to sit down with is a book by Edith Holden do you know it? If you are an old soul like myself, one who is a country girl at heart, loves nature and art then you know that I am talking about the book The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.

This is the entry at the bottom of the April cover page. Mrs. Holden was a wonderful artist and so on each page denoting a new month she has illustrated what she sees in the country side in that season. For April she has painted a bird amongst the primroses and wild violets of the British country side. Just delightful!

And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue

She also includes lots of poetry, factual information about the month and seasons she gathered, mottoes of her day and lots of illustrations and watercolor paintings. She was a rather accomplished artist. But really her fame came 70 yrs. later with the publishing of this lovely and humble nature notebook.

Well, I am now spending the still chilly nights reading The Edwardian Lady~The Story of Edith Holden This book is biography. It tells of Edith's life as a child, her family- she had 4 sisters and 2 brothers. She was well educated and went to art school. In my opinion she was the pre-cursor to another of my favorites, Beatrix Potter. They seem to run along the same country path so to speak.

These are two books you should read and have on your library shelf . Both will bring warm sunshine to your soul. I enjoy reading about ordinary lives that appreciated the simple complexities of nature and the world that God created. I love that Edith Holden documented this in her art and journaling. This is a reminder to me to do the same. To place myself in nature at a particular time to remember it. This lovely journal has a well-worn organic feel to it- that old soul feel.

I know I would have liked Edith, I like to think we would have been great friends. Her country diary makes me want to get outside. It makes me want to take a stroll along the banks of a brook, on a forgotten country path and listen to birds sing and do art. And be inspired.

Remembrance Press The Girlhood Home Companion & Girlhood Tidbit #10

Girlhood is a precious time. It is a time of learning, growing, and loving. It is when you learn skills and womanly arts. It is the time to grow in your faith as a cherished creature of God's workmanship. It is a time to build loving relationships with your family and a time to discover the Godly character within yourself.

Sometimes in this world we live in it is difficult to find just the right thing to support this kind of thinking. I longed for something like this and the Lord was faithful! I would like to suggest a wonderful publication to enhance this journey for mothers, daughters, and grandmothers. It is a publication that gently sweetens this precious time like honey in a cup of tea. It is called The Girlhood Home Companion. And it is exactly that, a companion.

This self published magazine by Remembrance Press and Jill Novak was just the kind of thing I was looking for that would grow the heart of my daughters and encourage them in their pursuit of godliness, purity, and womanly arts.

I love sitting down for "girl time" with my girls sipping tea and reading or doing hand work as we learn more about each other. It has been a favorite in our household. I hope you will drop in for a visit to Remembrance Press and The Girlhood Home Companion you will leave feeling that the heart of your special girl has been refreshed, renewed and blessed.

Great News I Just Have to Share!

I was published to my delight in a wonderful magazine called Belle Armoire. This magazine features "The Artistry of Clothing and Accessories". This is such a wonderful honor to have my sewing artwork included in this fabulous publication!

I submitted two pieces for an art call: "Becoming Jane". A light blue velvet choker and matching handbag highlighting our heroine herself. The choker features a hidden pocket where Miss Elizabeth of Pride and Prejudice keeps the words of love professed to her by Mr. Darcy. The handbag features a small diary attached to the front with, smokey light blue rhinestones, antique shell buttons, a lady figurehead and hand sewn medallion lace attached to the bottom of the purse. This feature article is by Amanda Crabtree and to my surprise she even wrote a lovely description of my work in her article, thanks Amanda!

It Has Been Awhile...

Hi all.
I have been hibernating, anyone else feel this way?
As I grow older it seems I have become keenly aware of how seasonal I am.

Isn't that a funny thing to say?
But it is true.

Wanting to retreat, rejuvenate, heal and stay sheltered.

However, I am sensing the thaws of spring and I am waking with the sunrise. My tender shoots are pushing towards the surface to be nurtured by light and heat. Ahhhh spring....kids breaking free and running around on newly mowed grass. Baby chicks and cherry blossoms, and all the miracles of spring! New life and resurrection.

I love the glow of the sunrise through my porch windows, it has been so warm and cheery the past couple of days! I have gotten out the garden gloves, seed catalogs, I have started weeding the garden and I am starting to plan my garden plots too. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have had a slow start to spring. I even began to wonder if we might just skip it altogether this year, but my allergies have told me otherwise!

I have felt the urge to update and spring clean too. So in that tradition, my website will get a bit of rejuvenation soon. I hope you will stop by(come visit at the end of April), if you do leave me a note or comment and tell me what you think of the new look. I am still trying to get things into the attic category or should I say out of the attic for the "attic sale" but that seems to be slow going!

It seems I keep getting pulled into the fresh air of my backyard where the chickens peck and chat with one another and the music of my children giggling reminds me that this is actually where I should be living life. So Blog-land, I am slowing down to a lazy spring breeze...I want to be able to hear the Lord's whisper and feel the gentle rhythm of the season, don't you?

I am really excited. I will be launching a new category on the website- e~patterns! This spring towards the middle of March this category should be up and running with the first e-pattern. I have been hard at work writing, sketching, photographing and of course sewing, cutting and making these fun patterns for you to enjoy at home.

Something New for Easter

I have created a new catagory at The Patchwork Heart, Co. called "In the Attic". Here you will find one-of-a-kind items, some new, some old, but all are treasured! I will be adding more all the time. Just know that what I have listed is what is there.

I just put up this lovely Easter Egg Centerpiece there. I made this for our Easter Celebration table last year. I just love it but you know how the attic is... when it is time to get rid of it -it has to go!

I love this centerpiece because it has the look and feel of the classic unglazed stoneware called Jasperware by Wedgewood. The color is a traditional Wedgewood color. It was perfect in my blue and white kitchen! It is available at The Patchwork Heart, Co.

This is part of what we sent to my oldest at college. I love getting mail ,especially if it is filled with fun goodies from people who love me. Even an unexpected note brings delight on a dreary winters day! I hope she has a wonderful weekend full of love and fun!

Unique Valentine Holder

I found this template in a bunch of old stuff I had lying around so unfortunately I don't remember where I got it from, bummer. I have been trying to clean out my studio for months literally. Sadly, it just isn't happening.

On the flip side, as I trudge through piles and containers, I end up finding all kinds of treasure I forgot I had! Does that ever happen to you? Well this template was one of those finds, it reminds me of a french fry box.

Who knew a greasy fry box could become a beautiful Valentine Tag Holder. I used Layers of Color Renaissance Hearts stamps to embellish the front along with a bit of gold glitter. Then for the tags I stamped with Regal Wings and Royal Birds, Old World Flourish, Fleur Hearts and Beaded Frames. These tags are ready to be personalized and embellished.

Creative Home Touches

I love decorating my home and I love making old things new! Recently, I took a pillow sham I have covering a throw pillow, and gave it a bit of creative new life. I love this fabric and its soft tones but I thought it could use a few more subtle details to add some texture and dimension.

I used a new stamp design from Layers of Color called Nature Walk. I used the largest stamp in the set, the flourish, and VersaMagic multi -surface chalk ink pad in Jumbo Java and stamped directly onto the fabric. This is my favorite ink ever. I use it so much I am due for a new ink pad soon. See how the stamp gives an added dimension and texture. Just enough to make it new!

Old World Meets My World

I have been dying to have a chandelier. Not just any chandelier but an antique one, with Fleur de lis and crystal drops and etched metal with lots of patina... yes the expensive kind. Well, I'm just to thrifty for that, must be my Scottish heritage showing. They are seriously hard to come by unless, you want to pay out the wazoo for one, which I don't... So I decided to try my hand at making a paper replica to tide me over till the day I discover "the one" under a bunch of junk at a garage sale.

Here is what I get to enjoy in the mean time. I used Layer of Colors new stamp line called Old World Flourish. Laura also has other new and wonderful stamps sets to choose from and tons of great ideas and inspirations to get you started on your own valentines go check it out!

For my Old World Flourish Chandelier I used the colors in my studio and lots of glitter and crystal-like beads. It hangs from a sheer ribbon right over my desk by my computer and brightens my day.
